Initial reconstruction results

Today Sam Arman and I are working on getting some reconstruction results from the data we've been collecting over the past two days. Sam is using a total station to collect 3D data points to form a rough reconstruction. I'll be processing video footage and stills to produce higher resolution partial reconstructions with texture and hopefully we can merge the two to form a consolidated 3D model.

Here's a preliminary reconstruction of the cave interior provided by Sam, it's the top view of the ceiling. The length from the leftmost point to the rightmost point is about 78 metres.

I've been testing out a few reconstruction software programs to assess their suitability for partial reconstruction of cave features. One such program takes two parallel views and morphs a plane mesh based on matched features and shadow to form a 3D representation of the objects captured in the images. The region where there is significant overlap between the two images is reconstructed more consistently than the regions where it can only be seen in one image. Here is an example partial reconstruction of a stalactite:

The cave is quite a complex structure and presents a difficult challenge to reconstruct.

I remember bumping my head on that stal a few times working in the pit like some kind of paleo newb. Good times! Thanks Wren man!
