Leaving the control room going aft on the starboard side we come to the Captains cabin. He is the only person aboard who does not have to share. Its proximity to the control room is because asleep or awake he needs to know what is going on. Also in this area are the crews washing and toilet facilities one of which in Ovens case has been converted into a darkroom facility for photograph processing, no not pictures of the crew! An important part of submarine work is surveillance, both visual and electronic, good quality photographs can be taken through the periscope, this can also be used during exercises to prove the boat was in a position to attack [and sink] other craft involved in those exercises.

The last space in this passage is the W/T office here operators transmit and receive messages on equipment that ranges from UHF, VHF to satellite and Long wave equipment, along with cypher equipment. In submarine Ovens all sensitive equipment has been removed, thus it looks a little sparse.

Developed and produced by John Eade for the WA Maritime Museum 2002
