Each rack has a locker just enough for a couple of pairs of overalls, some going ashore clothes, a number one uniform for formal occasions and few personal knickknacks.[Photo's,letters, Walkman]Just so you don't get lonely the EM [Electrician] watch keeper will accesses the battery compartment below every hour through the hatch in this compartment.
This creates a hazard as hydrogen gas from this compartment into the subs living area. This is why atmospheric testing is continuously carried out in the crew compartments and throughout the boat. Catalytic illumarons housed in the upper bulkheads burn off the hydrogen before the gas builds up and becomes dangerous.
The next set of accommodation is that for the senior ratings Petty Officers and Chief Petty Officers [Chuffs and Puffs] here again you can see that space is at a premium. The badges and crests on the bulkhead [wall] are mementoes of goodwill visits and trophies of deeds done, there is also a television and VCR for off duty relaxation and a fridge for drinks. In the passageway is the second of the three oxygen generators. [Forward, amidships and aft]
Finally we come to the officers accommodation and wardroom, as with the other accommodation racks they fold away to make room for meals and relaxation. There are repeaters for the depth gauge and compass so even off duty these can be monitored by the officers.
Under the whole of the accommodation are the two massive batteries [The Box ] with 7420 amp hour rating they have 224 cells in each producing 2.2 volts a total of 448 cells. At over half a ton a cell, the batteries weigh in at nearly 200 tons and contain the power of 94,000 car batteries! |
