The motor room is where the two giant electric motors which can give a total of 4500 hp are controlled and monitored. The motors are below the control room and drive the two propeller shafts all the time with power from either the diesel generators, or from the batteries. Their power is regulated so they can creep along just using 110 volts, or at full speed a massive 880 volts are needed. For the batteries to be able to supply this they are linked in parallel [grouped down] for low speeds or in series [grouped up] for high. The difference being when at low speed submerged your battery will last more than a day, at high speed perhaps no more than an hour |
