Natural Science

The Museum is custodian of the State’s reference collections of over three million specimens (and associated records) of fossils, minerals, meteorites, and all the major groups of living animals, both aquatic and terrestrial. The collections date back to the 1890’s and form the main resource for the Museum’s natural science research, publication and education programs. Research is primarily taxonomic – i.e. naming and classification of fossils, animals, minerals and meteorites. Because of its huge size ( 2.5 million sq km) and vast coastline (12,500 km) much of the State’s biodiversity has yet to be documented and exciting new fossil and meteorite finds are still being made.
