The Western Australia Museum proudly presents the blockbuster exhibition "How to Make a Monster; the art and technology of animatronics".

This unique exhibition will uncover the secrets behind movie creatures and how they are made – with interactive exhibits you can really get your claws into!

Created by Academy Award winning animatronics expert John Cox, and his team from the John Cox Creature Workshop in Queensland, the How to Make a Monster exhibition showcases some of the stars of Cox’s movie career and will take you on a behind-the-scenes look at the creative techniques used in visual effects and movie animatronics.

Through interactive exhibits you can become an animatronics puppeteer, maneuvering the crocodile tail from the movie Peter Pan, use X-ray eyes to see what makes ‘Junior the Dinosaur’ move, check out Inspector Gadget’s gadgets or touch the alien guts from Pitch Black.

The exhibition

The exhibition will take you on a journey of monster creation from the original concept, the storyboard, how the maquettes are made, and then how the full size pieces are sculpted, moulded and finished.

You will also see how animatronics components are designed and installed to create the bones and muscles that bring monsters to life.

The exhibition includes:

• 30 exhibits including Gillman, The Abominable Snowman and gorillas from George of the Jungle 2;

• interactive exhibition components including Disney’s Inspector Gadget, Australia’s largest prehistoric lizard, the Megalania, and the x-ray eyes of Junior the dinosaur;

• huge exhibits including the crocodile from Peter Pan, aliens from Pitch Black and werewolves; and engineering components showcasing the animatronics engineers craft.

This exhibition will appeal to anyone who loves the movies and creature effects!
