SPIN - WA MUSIC FROM UNDERGROUND TO ON THE AIR

A new exhibition at the Western Australian Museum celebrates the strength and vitality of the WA music industry.

SPIN: WA music from underground to on-the-air runs until May 9th at the Western Australian Museum as part of the 2004 Perth International Arts Festival.

The exhibition features interactive sound booths, music clips, photographs and interviews with Western Australian musicians from 1970 to 2004. It showcases memorabilia from WA bands including The Triffids, Jebediah, Dave Hole, The Stems, The Dugites, Allegiance, The Manikins, The Kryptonics, The Hoodoo Gurus, and The Scientists, to name a few.

Western Australia has been the breeding ground for some of Australia’s most original and successful bands and artists.

Despite its isolation from the eastern music industry capitals WA has consistently produced its fair share of musical success stories. Bands such as AC/DC, INXS, The Hoodoo Gurus, The Eurogliders, and The Triffids (to name but a few) were stacked with or founded entirely upon WA talent.

From regional cities across Western Australia such as Kalgoorlie (Tim Rogers), Albany (Ross Ryan), Broome (the Pigram Brothers), and Fremantle (Bon Scott), artists and bands have emerged to achieve national and international success. Some migrated to Perth to contribute to the strong live music scene, others hitched their stars to the industry capitals of Melbourne and Sydney.

Many have cursed the isolation, but the upshot of is that WA bands have often had time to develop away from the interfering gaze of the recording industry. Sometimes the isolation has yielded intoxicating results. Growing up in a far away place often leaves an indelible stamp on the music that emerges.

SPIN will be open at the WA Museum’s Perth site in the Culture Centre from Friday February 13 until to Sunday May 9, 2004 before engaging in a Western Australian regional tour.

The exhibition has been an initiative of the Western Australian Contemporary Music Taskforce, developed by the Department of Culture and the Arts to support the development of contemporary music in Western Australia.
