Diving Technology

The first diving bell was invented by Guglielmo de Lorena in 1535 as a large wooden bell that rested on the divers shoulders and had a tube running from the surface that piped fresh air. The ‘diving bell’ concept was not fully realised until 1691 when Edmund Halley patented a wooden bell large enough to carry several people to the sea floor.
