Underwater Robots –
ROV technology-introduction to underwater robotics

image01

An ROV is an underwater robot which is linked to a ship by a tether, a group of cables that carry electrical power, video and data signals back and forth between the operator and the vehicle. Additional equipment is commonly added to expand the vehicle’s capabilities. These may include sonar's, magnetometers, a still camera, a manipulator or cutting arm, water samplers, and instruments that measure water clarity, light penetration and temperature. A single or dual joystick system controls the vehicle’s thrusters, enabling the pilot to alter the heading, depth or position of the ROV.
