Our logo represents the earth god Aker, shown here as two lions sitting back to back. One lion faces west where the sun sets and begins its nightly journey through the underworld; the other faces east towards the rising sun and the new day. These two lions guard the entrance to and exit from the underworld, and were closely associated with the journey of the sun through the underworld. Chris Bryant’s drawing is based on a depiction of Aker in the 19th Dynasty Book of the Dead of Ani, a papyrus in the British Museum. The Western Australian Museum’s rare book collection includes an 1890s publication of this papyrus.
