LEFT: The Hibis Temple, el Kharga Oasis. This is one of two temples built by the Persians in Egypt. Begun in 588 BC during the 26th Dynasty by Apries, it was finished by Darius I in 522 BC, although later pharaohs made additions and a church was also built on the site. It was probably built on earlier foundations.
It was originally surrounded by what was the garrisoned capital of Kharga but today it is in a palm grove and is undergoing massive reconstruction and relocation. It was damaged in an earthquake in 1991 and is now threatened by rising water levels.
