Ship's timber artefact recovered from Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon)

Fragment of sacrificial planking. Very worn, hardly any original surface preserved. Sheathing nail holes present, closely spaced in diagonal or alternating pattern, holes square in section. Interior surface: No animal hair preserved. Exterior surface: Rounded nail head impressions preserved.

Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon)

The Vergulde Draeck (Gilt Dragon) sailed from Texel bound for Batavia (Jakarta), under Pieter Albertsz carrying trade goods and eight chests of silver to the value of 78,6000 guilders. On 28 April 1656 the Vergulde Draeck was wrecked just south of Ledge Point. 75 of the 193 made it to shore.
