Visit the Submarine Ovens!
HMAS Ovens is a former Royal Australian Navy Oberon Class submarine. It is a major iconic object and attraction for the Western Australian Museum - Maritime. The Museum offers a special guided tour through the submarine that will give you an idea what it would have been like to serve in this Cold War vessel.
Daily tours run during normal opening hours from 10.00am to 4.30pm (Last tour starts 3.30pm - no advance bookings available for 3.30 tour on weekends)
Closed: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, January 1st, Good Friday
Tours leave from the Maritime Museum every half hour, buy your ticket at the front desk of the Maritime Museum. There is a joint ticket for Museum & Submarine or a ticket just for the Submarine.
Note: Bad weather conditions may lead to possible closures.

Health and Safety Information
The Museum cares about your health, safety and comfort during these tours, please read this important information before you book in for the Submarine Tour. The duration of this tour is 1 hour.
Because the submarine experience includes:
Walking up and down four flights of scaffold stairs (nine metres high)
Climbing up and down steeply inclined ladders all of which have guiding handrails

Bending through narrow hatchways and low lying areas
Stepping over bulkheads and manoeuvring through confined spaces

Floor grating with gaps that may allow small hand held objects to fall through or high heeled shoes to become lodged
Vertical ladders which have a long stretch incorporated in the top step

To complete this tour you will need:
- A reasonable level of fitness and strength
- Full body control and hand-eye-foot coordination
- The ability to climb independently (unsupported by walking aids)
- Your hands free at all times, backpacks and hand held items can be left in the lockers available (bum bags are available for cameras and medication)
If you have any of the following, it may impact your ability to participate safely:
- Back, limb or joint injuries
- Respiratory or heart conditions
- Missing limbs or part thereof
- Vertigo, claustrophobia, dizziness or loss of balance
- Visual impairment (except wearing prescription glasses or contact lenses)
- Pregnancy (especially if over 24 weeks)
- Inappropriate footwear, such as thongs, strappy sandals or high heels
In the interest of the safety of you and others you cannot participate in the tour if you:
- Are under the age of 5 years old
- Are between the age of 5 and 16 and unaccompanied by an adult
- Are under the influence of alcohol
- Have a major injury or broken bones
Please note that you will not be permitted to board the submarine if you possess food or drinks and/or are carrying a backpack or hand held items, please use the available lockers for these items.
The Museum acknowledges that sometimes there are unusual and exceptional circumstances when the above guidelines may be varied at the Museum’s discretion. To avoid disappointment please contact the Museum at least five days in advance of your visit to discuss your situation.
REWARDING VOLUNTEER WORK ABOARD THE SUBMARINE HMAS OVENS
The Western Australian Museum – Maritime is seeking male and female volunteer guides with a maritime interest, to conduct tours on the Submarine Ovens. This is an opportunity to be part of a friendly team of volunteers and to enjoy interaction with Museum visitors.
No experience is necessary as applicants will be provided with training and information about the Submarine HMAS Ovens.
Applicants must be reasonably fit and comfortable with heights, and prepared to commit two days per month to rewarding volunteer work.
