Dinosaur eggs gifted to the WA Museum
The Western Australian Museum recently received a rare and ancient gift in recognition of the key role played by two of its palaeontologists in the recovery in 2004 of thousands of illegally imported Chinese fossils. Dr Ken McNamara and Dr John Long - now with the Museum Victoria - worked with the Federal Police and Customs to help identify the fossils and their origins.
Following this, the People’s Republic of China gifted four of them to the Commonwealth in recognition of the year-long operation to track them down. The fossils - the oldest of which dates back more than 200 million years - were presented to Culture and the Arts Minister Sheila McHale at a ceremony at the WA Museum - Perth, where the fossils are now on display.
