Western Australian Museum Kalgoorlie Education

Dig into the past and explore the heritage and history of the Eastern Goldfields! All programs address the Western Australian Curriculum Framework. Programs can be adapted to suit the needs of Home Schooling groups, PEAC groups, Education Support classes and students learning English as a Second Language. Contact us to tailor a program to suit your needs, or choose an existing program.

It is preferable that bookings are made a minimum of two weeks in advance. Please advise at the time of your booking if your group has any access requirements or special needs.

All program costs are GST inclusive

Assisted visits - $5.00
Unassisted visits – class donation would be appreciated

Adult Supervision
The responsibility of children remains with the teaching staff from the visiting school or educational organisation.

Kindergarten to Year 7 - Adult supervision of one adult per six students
Year 8 to Year 12 - Adult supervision of one adult per ten students

Program duration:
All programs can be adapted to teacher time frames.

Unassisted Tours
Years K - 12 (1 - 1.5 hours)
Bookings are essential for unassisted tours and our Education Officer will be happy to discuss ideas for your visit when you call. It is recommended that teachers visit in advance to familiarise themselves with the Museum.

We are able to help you with your programs in curriculum areas of Society and Environment, Science, the Arts and English. Contact the Museum for further information.

Early Goldfields Overview
S&E
All Years (1.5 – 2 hours)
An entertaining program designed for students visiting the Goldfields, incorporating a presentation and tour of the Museum. Immerse yourself in the life of the early Goldfields by visiting the Sandalwood Camp, the old Miners Cottage and the replica Western Australian Bank.

Early Goldfields Extension
A, E, M, S, S&E

All Years (1.5 – 2 hours)
Focus topics include Water, Transport and Childhood, incorporating role-play, sports and handicrafts. Make damper, wash clothes the old fashioned way, make dolly-peg dolls, experience an old fashioned classroom and play old goldfields games. An entertaining program designed for students visiting the Goldfields, incorporating a presentation and tour of the Museum. Immerse yourself in the life of the early Goldfields by visiting the Sandalwood Camp, the old Miners Cottage and the replica Western Australian Bank.

Innovative and Handmade (New Program Available Term 3 2008)
S&E, T&E

All Years (1.5 – 2 hours)
In the late 1800s and early 1900s resources were limited. There was limited material for toys, not like we have now. On display at the Museum there are lots of innovative ways that everyday items were reused and given another lease on life. Come to the Museum to see how things were and have a go at making your own toys and other useful items.

School Incursions
The Education Officer will visit your staff room and show you what we can offer teachers. Resources, in class programs, guest speakers, useful expert contacts, objects and more. We can also follow up your visit to the Museum with a program in your classroom with more museum material.

On-site Loan Collection
The Western Australian Museum – Kalgoorlie-Boulder has an onsite collection of items ready to loan out. Items in the collection are suitable to support teaching and learning programs in schools and other education institutions.
