The new building for the Western Australian Maritime Museum provides exhibition spaces, after hours facilities, educational and administrative offices and workshops to expand and complement existing museum facilities in Cliff Street. The building draws inspiration from Western Australia's rich maritime heritage and from its unique setting on a site of historic significance within a working port. The museum is the first stage of the redevelopment of Victoria Quay and provides the waterfront with a civic focus.

The development forms part of a museum precinct which encompasses the existing museum facilities in Cliff Street and other important historic and heritage sites around the West End of Fremantle. Future developments will see the existing building in Cliff Street remodelled to become an interpretive centre and Centre of Excellence for Conservation.

The fundamental objectives of the project are:

  • Provide a world class maritime museum to tell the story of WA's maritime history;
  • Embody design excellence that takes advantage of the landmark setting to become an architectural icon;
  • Satisfy the operational requirements of the WAMM and to accommodate the changing needs of its growing endeavours.
