Loan Centre

The Western Australian Museum maintains an extensive loan collection of themed education kits and resource boxes, cased and loose specimens as well as historical artefacts. These items can be borrowed to support teaching and learning programs in schools and other education institutions.
2008 review

The Western Australian Museum is working to create a new education resource centre service. Part of this is a review of the current Loan Centre services at the Western Australian Museum – Perth. During this time, the Loan Centre will continue to loan resource boxes and a number of popular artefacts and cased fauna only.

The new services will be phased in from mid 2008 and early 2009. We are keen to have your thoughts and ideas on the type of specimens and loan cases you would like to borrow from the Museum. The Museum would appreciate your help by filling out our survey customer use and satisfaction survey.

Booking and Borrowing
The Loan Centre is based at the Western Australian Museum - Perth, in the Perth Cultural Centre, however loans may be made from anywhere within Western Australia. The Loan Centre is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30am – 10:30am and 2:00 - 5:00pm. Patrons are required to provide transport for all items borrowed.

A catalogue of reservable items can be found on the Loans List. As the Loan Centre provides a very popular service, we strongly recommend that items for special programs or events be booked early to avoid disappointment.

Items from the collection may be booked by telephoning (08) 9427 2859 or email Loancentre@museum.wa.gov.au. Arrangements to view the collection may also be made on this number. All items attract a small charge and may be borrowed at the time of collection without pre-booking (if not already reserved).

Conditions of Borrowing
The borrowing period for the Perth metropolitan area is two weeks. The borrowing period for country loans is three weeks. Payments can be made in cash or by cheque at the time of pick up or patrons can also be invoiced.

Most items in the loan collection can be transported in a regular family sedan, however some large items require a larger vehicle. Patrons wishing to borrow large items are expected to provide suitable transport and bring an assistant. Our staff reserve the right to refuse a loan if appropriate transport is not provided.

Commercial organisations may be used to courier items. Most items in the loan collection can be safely transported this way. Patrons are asked to inform staff if this arrangement applies at the time of booking, in order to provide sufficient time for packing.

All items in the loan collection are in good condition at the time of borrowing, and must be handled with care. Loss or damage to any items must be immediately reported to the Education and Public Programs Department on (08) 9427 2792. Patrons are requested not to attempt repairs themselves.

Cost of Borrowing
Education Institutions and Non-profit Organisations
Reservable Items and Cases $10.00 per fortnight
Non-reservable (loose) Items $4.00 per fortnight

Commercial Organisations
We regret that we are unable to loan items to commercial organisations.
