Opal Craftsman

 

The Opal used in these works was nearly all mined by Laurie Meakins, an 85 yr old self- taught craftsman. He has collected from fields in Queensland, South Australia and NSW. The opals are displayed in their natural rock forms, enhanced by a surround of lead crystal.

Available are round and hexagonal paperweights, keyrings, phials and a decorative perfume bottle.

These original artworks are by indigenous artists from the Papulankutja Aboriginal Community at Blackstone, in the heart of the Gibson Desert.

 

 The paintings are on unique, environmentally friendly paper made of spinifex, also created by the Community.They only partially harvest the leaves and stems, so the the plant survives and can be used again.

In the 1980's the WA Museum commissioned renowned scientific illustrators to produce drawings for the covers of their records and supplements.

A selection of the finely detailed black ink works are now available as prints, including works by Martin Thompson, Jill Ruse and Gaye Roberts. The shop has a choice of ten drawings, including birds, marsupials, and seals.
