Redemption of a Slave Ship: The James Matthews by Graeme Henderson © Western Australian Museum 2009

Redemption Of A Slave Ship:

The James Matthews

Graeme Henderson

In 1807, the Atlantic slave trade was made illegal. However, over the next fifty years, millions of kidnapped Africans continued to be transported unwillingly to the sugar plantations of the New World. The James Matthews, a wreck discovered off Fremantle, had sailed under the name Don Francisco during those dark years of the illegal slave trade, and the wreck is the best known example of a slave ship from that time. Through meticulous research in Africa and the Americas, in London and Australia, the author tells not only the story of the ship, but those of its passengers, slaves, slave traders, immigrants and ships crew.

Contains colour photographs, illustrations, maps and diagrams.

1772 book

1772: The French Annexation of New Holland

The Tale of Louis de Saint Alouarn

Phillipe Goddard and Tugdual de Kerros

The French-English rivalry in the 18th century set the backdrop for exploration in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The French Government decided to support an expedition that would solve the mystery of Terre Australes, restore the prestige of it's navy and equal Lieutenant James Cook's achievements. By 1770, James Cook had only proved that the 'Great South Land' would not be found in the fairly low latitudes of the Pacific.

In 1771, two young, ambitious, French naval officers and Breton nobles, Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen and his second-in-command Louis de Saint Alouarn, were given permission by the King of France, Louis XV, to undertake a voyage to discover and claim in the name of France, Terre Australes.

Proudly published by the Western Australian Museum, 1772; The French Annexation of New Holland is a story of this epic voyage; a re-telling of a chapter of Australian history whose significance has failed to attract the recognition it deserves.
