MUSEUM ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (MAP)

The staff of this unit are available for visits to community based museums throughout the state to provide advisory and training services.

Are you aware that appointments can also be made to visit them at the Western Australian Museum headquarters in Perth?

Australia's movable heritage is dispersed amongst communities throughout our country in what has become known as the Distributed National Collection. As part of the National Conservation Strategy, the Western Australian Museum extends services to organisations which care for elements of the Distributed National Collection.

Basic information is available from the Museum Assistance Program (MAP) to any organisation or individual. However, the unit's major focus is the provision of advisory and training services to communities and institutions responsible for permanent collections which operate within the broad definition of a museum adopted by the peak international body the International Council of Museums (ICOM). This includes assisting collections cared for by organisations such as Local Government, historical societies, Aboriginal cultural organisations and other community groups as well as universities and government agencies.

MAP offers information and advice on all aspects of the planning, management and operation
of museums as community assets. Advisory services are tailored to assist organisations to achieve the principles of best practice outlined in the national guidelines for museums, galleries and keeping places.

The following areas of activity are covered by MAP:
