Frank Broeze was truly the most wonderful teacher I ever had the privilege to learn from. His subject knowledge in maritime history, indeed in so many areas of international relations and world history; his passion for communicating his enthusiasm to his students; his down to earth and realistic approach to student learning and assessment methods; and his simple joy in life and living - all these were hallmarks of an amazing individual. That his career was cut short, and indeed that his life with his family and friends was cut short, was a loss and a tragedy for them and for Western Australia. But the fact that he was still teaching, despite battling severe illness, up until the day before his passing, is testament to how much he loved to do what he did, and what hundreds of former students like me will always remember him for.
